Fire extinguishers are probably the most well known fire protection device. They are classified as an active fire protection which is used to extinguish or control small fires, often in emergency situations.

The UK recognises six fire classes:

Class A - fires involving organic solids such as paper and wood.

Class B - fires involving flammable or combustible liquids such as petrol, grease and oil.

Class C - fires involving flammable gases.

Class D - fires involving combustible metals.

Class E - fires involving electrical equipment/appliances.

Class F - fires involving cooking fat and oil.

Which type of extinguisher tackles which fire class:

Water - Class A.

Foam - Class A, B.

Dry Powder - A, B, C, E.

CO2 - B, E.

Wet Chemical - A, B, F.
